Now You See Me

I can honestly say I didn’t see it coming. The premise of the film I love – magicians doing heists in front of everyone and no one being able to pin it on them. The arrogance of the magicans, the tricks; it all appeals to me in the weird way these things sometimes do.

I thoroughly enjoyed the film and I can’t think when a film last had me looking for the answer so hard that I didn’t see it. Though admittedly I did figure out a few of the tricks before they were explained and some of the twists.

Top-notch acting, top-notch performances, and I’d be curious to find out how much of the magic was genuine and how much was staged. Was the handcuff trick genuine or was that clever editing?

Despicable Me 2

After an aborted attempt to watch Now You See Me on Wednesday, we went to see Despicable Me 2 last night. And it was good. Really good. Giggling uncontrollably in our seats good.

Especially the bit during the credits.

But also the bit after the credits were we starting smack-talking with cries of “gelado!” which got Sarah cracking up enough she was having trouble breathing. (As a note, if she did end up dying as a result, we are agreed that it was the gelado that did her in, not us*)

A lot of the funny bits were in the trailers, as you might expect (“Lipstick taser!”) but the trailers didn’t feature “Gru-derzella” or many of the minions’ antics. If you enjoyed Despicable Me, definitely go watch DM2. If you haven’t seen either, watch both!

*In case it needs to be said, this is a joke.

World War Z

I saw World War Z on Thursday. Decided to go see it since we weren’t having a No Rest for the Wicked meeting that night. I should preface this by saying that I haven’t read the book (really must get around to doing that) so I can’t compare the two (unlike The Oatmeal).

World War Z PosterI quite liked it. It was a good film, but I didn’t feel like it actually did a lot. Brad Pitt ran around a lot avoiding nearly all contact with the zombies and apparently took a lot longer than I did to notice that the core of the plot. The ending left quite a bit to be asked for. It was less a film about zombies and the war against them than it was about how awesome Brad Pitt was and how much he cares about his family above resolving the zombie problem. It didn’t even approach any of the story I’d expect from a book based on that story or even from a serious zombie film.

All in all, I enjoyed it, but it didn’t really live up to my expectations.
